Old Balkia - Cocktails

Old Balkia

A cocktail that whispers tales of old-world charm with a Balkan twist, inviting you to savor a moment of history with each sip. It’s a nod to the classic, with a bold embrace of the unique. Here’s how to craft an experience that resonates with the soul of the Balkans:

Ingredients

  • 4 cl Balkia
  • 1 Sugar lump
  • 3 Drops of angustura bitter
  • Spray with Absinthe

How to make

  1. Chill Your Glass: Begin with a chilled old-fashioned glass. The coolness adds a crisp edge, setting the stage for a truly refreshing encounter.
  2. Muddle the Sugar and Bitters: Place a sugar lump at the bottom of the glass. Add 3 drops of angostura bitter directly onto the sugar. With a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently crush and mix the sugar with the bitters. This base of sweetness and complexity will set the tone for what’s to come.
  3. Add Balkia: Pour 4cl of Balkia over the muddled sugar and bitters. The rakija’s depth and fruitiness will start to weave its magic, blending with the bitters to create a symphony of flavors.
  4. Ice It Up: Add a few large ice cubes to the glass. The goal is to chill the drink while diluting it ever so slightly, bringing everything into perfect balance.
  5. Spray with Absinthe: Now, for the pièce de résistance – a light spray of absinthe over the top. If you don’t have a sprayer, simply rinse the glass with absinthe before adding the other ingredients, or pour a tiny amount over the back of a spoon to gently layer it. The absinthe’s herbal notes will add a hint of mystery and complexity, elevating the drink to something truly special.
  6. Stir Gently: With a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently. It’s about integrating, not aerating. We’re aiming for a seamless melding of flavors.
  7. Garnish (Optional): A twist of lemon peel or an orange slice can add a final touch of aroma and flair. It’s a nod to tradition, with a twist that’s unmistakably Balkan.
  8. Enjoy: Take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship before taking a sip. Let the “Old Balkia” transport you to a place where the past and present mingle in a dance of flavors.
